Jean-Charles Dumay appeared in theatre under the direction of Stanislas Nordey in 'Pylades' and 'Calderon' by Pier Paolo Pasolini and in 'La Dispute' by Marivaux, among others. Under the direction of Frédéric Fisbach, he appeared in 'Annunciation' by Paul Claudel, 'Tokyo Notes' by Oriza Hirata and 'Bérénice' by Jean Racine, among others. He worked with the Polish director Krystian Lupa on 'Verstörung' by Thomas Bernhard at the Théâtre Vidy in Lausanne and the Théâtre de la Colline in Paris and with Karim Belkacem on 'Zerbombt' by Sarah Kane and Shakespeare's 'Mass für Mass'. Under the direction of Gwenaël Morin, he was part of the production 'Re-Paradise', which was based on the famous improvisation play 'Paradise Now' by the American troupe The Living Theater. He regularly collaborates with Philippe Quesne. In 2017 he played in 'The Night of the Moles' and in 2018 in 'Crash Park'.

In film, he has worked with directors Bertrand Bonello, Wim Wenders, Xavier Beauvois, Olivier Assayas, Alain Gomis, Djamel Bendeddouche, Cheick Ndiaye, Anthony Cordier and Bertrand Tavernier. In 2015, he was involved in 'L'Astragale' by Brigitte Sy, shot 'La femme de la plaque argentique' with Kiyoshi Kurosawa and 'Polina' with Angelin Preljocaj. In Basel, he can be seen in Philippe Quesne's 'Cosmic Drama'.
