Hope
Nelson
The American mezzo-soprano Hope Nelson was born in San Francisco, California. She studied opera singing at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (Artist Diploma 2024, Master of Music 2022) and at the University of British Columbia (Bachelor of Music 2020) in Vancouver, Canada. On the opera stage in North America, she has appeared as Sesto in Mozart's ‹La clemenza di Tito›, Fuchs in Janáček's ‹Das schlaue Füchslein›, Nicklausse in Offenbach's ‹Les Contes d'Hoffmann›, Sesto in Handel's ‹Giulio Cesare› and Liza Elliott in Kurt Weill's ‹Lady in the Dark›. As a concert singer, she sang Schubert's ‹Die schöne Müllerin› for the Long Beach Opera. She is a two-time winner (2023, 2024) of the Laffont Competition at the Metropolitan Opera in San Francisco. Hope Nelson has been a member of the opera studio OperAvenir at Theater Basel since the 24/25 season and sings the roles of Rosina ‹Il barbiere di Siviglia›, Fuchs, Mercedes ‹Carmen›, Rossweisse ‹Die Walküre› and First Witch/Second Lady ‹Dido und Aeneas›.
