Musical direction
Georg Köhler studied conducting at the conservatories in Stuttgart and Zurich, where he graduated with honours under Johannes Schlaefli. He also received formative impulses in masterclasses with Bernard Haitink, Esa-Pekka Salonen and David Zinman. He attracted international attention as a winner of the ‹Mahler Competition 2023›. This recognition followed his position as Assistant Conductor of the Orchestre National d'Île-de-France - extended to two seasons at the request of the musicians. Since then, he has conducted orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland and the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra. The 25/26 season demonstrates his versatility in opera, ballet and symphonic music. He conducts works ranging from Schubert and Britten to contemporary composers such as Sivan Eldar. Prominent debuts have taken him to the SWR Symphony Orchestra, the Jena Philharmonic, the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the National Symphony Orchestra Dublin, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía and the Kärntner Sinfonieorchester Klagenfurt, while he has returned to Theater Basel and the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana. Georg Köhler has regularly conducted ballet performances at Theater Basel since 2018.
