Franck Chartier was born in Roanne, France, and began dancing with Rosella Hightower in Cannes, among others. Between 1986 and 1989, he was a member of the Ballet du 20ème Siècle under Maurice Béjart. He then worked with Angelin Preljocaj and danced in ‹Le spectre de la rose› at the Opéra de Paris. In 1994 he moved to Brussels and performed in the production ‹Kinok› by Compagnie Rosas. He then worked on several duets with Ine Wichterich and Anne Mouselet and in productions by Needcompany (‹Tres›, 1995) and Les Ballets C de la B ('La Tristeza Complice', 1997, ‹Iets op Bach›, 1997 and ‹Wolf›, 2002). In 2013, he created ‹33 rue Vandenbranden› for the Gothenburg Opera and ‹Marouf, Savetier du Caire› by Jerôme Deschamps for the Opéra Comique de Paris. In 2015, he staged ‹The Lost Room› for the Nederlands Dans Theater, for which he received the prestigious Dutch Zwaan Prize. In 2017, he created ‹The hidden floor›, his second collaboration with the Dutch company. More recently, he worked with Gabriela Carrizo on ‹31 Rue Vandenbranden›, which opened the prestigious Biennale de la Danse de Lyon in 2018. Franck Chartier has been artistic director of Peeping Tom together with Gabriela Carrizo since the company was founded in 2000. The company's first opera ‹Dido und Aeneas› was created in 2021 for the Grand Théâtre de Genève and in collaboration with Le Concert d'Astrée and can be seen for the first time at Theater Basel in the 24/25 season.
