Elliott Carlton Hines was born in Houston, Texas, and studied at the Oberlin Conservatory and the Juilliard School. He was a scholarship holder at the Heidelberger Frühling and a finalist at the EquiVoci Musicali competition in Milan. His career began in the Gerard Mortier International Opera Studio at the Salzburg State Theater, where he was later permanently engaged. He has been a member of the ensemble at the Stuttgart State Opera since the 20/21 season. There he has sung in 'Platée', 'Der Räuber Hotzenplotz', 'Johannespassion', 'Saint François d'Assise', 'Dora' and in the baroque opera 'La Fest', among others. Guest engagements have taken him to La Scala in Milan in 'The Seven Deadly Sins' and 'Mahagonny Songspiel' under Riccardo Chailly and to Birmingham Opera in 'Wake'. His repertoire includes roles such as Papageno in 'Die Zauberflöte', Masetto in 'Don Giovanni', Il Conte in 'Le nozze di Figaro', Schaunard in 'La bohème', Prosdocimo in 'Il turco in Italia' and Testo in 'Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda'. As a concert soloist, he sang Bach's 'St. Matthew Passion' and 'Christmas Oratorio' at the Oregon Bach Festival as well as Handel's 'La resurrezione' under William Christie. He will make his debut at Theater Basel in 'Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny' in the 25/26 season.
