Ellen Hofmann was born in Berlin, Germany. After studying fashion and theatre design in Berlin and London, she worked at the Volksbühne Berlin from 1993 to 2004, first as a costume assistant and later as a costume designer for Dimiter Gotscheff, Johann Kresnik and Tim Staffel, among others. From 1996 to 1998 she worked as a video and costume designer for the Wooster Group in New York. Since 2004 she has worked as a freelance costume designer for directors such as Roger Vontobel, Johanna Wehner, Christian Friedel and Alia Luque in Berlin (Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Maxim Gorki Theater, Deutsches Theater, Komische Oper), at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, Schauspiel Frankfurt, Thalia Theater Hamburg, Staatsschauspiel Dresden, Semperoper Dresden, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Oper Hannover and at the Salzburg Festival. Since 2013 she has been teaching costume design at the University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg. She has designed costumes for numerous works by Roger Vontobel, including Rose Bernd, Maria Stuart and Carmilla or the Age of Vampires at the Schauspiel Bern. As a member of Trio ACE, Ellen Hofmann is designing the costumes for Theater Basel's production of ‹1984›.
