Chor des Theater Basel
Choir
In the critics' survey conducted by the renowned specialist magazine Opernwelt, the choir of Theater Basel was voted Choir of the Year 2013. Thanks to the continuous, disciplined and meticulous work of longstanding choirmaster Henryk Polus, an ensemble of 38 professional singers from 11 nations has been formed. Homogeneity and precision, power and beauty of sound, expressiveness and enthusiasm, stylistic confidence and flexibility are the specialities that have made this choir famous. The choir has also excelled in the field of oratorio and concert literature, earning numerous excellent reviews and the Bavarian Theatre Prize in 2001 for the production 'Actus tragicus'. In the 07/08 season, the choir was nominated several times as Opera Choir of the Year in the trade journal Opernwelt for the productions 'On the town' and 'Don Carlos' in Calixto Bieito's production. In the 16/17 season, the productions 'Donnerstag aus Licht' by Karlheinz Stockhausen and 'Khovanshchina' by Modest Mussorgsky were nominated as the second most important opera choir in the German-speaking world. Its extraordinarily varied repertoire ranges from baroque works to romantic operas, operettas and modern music. Michael Clark has been conducting the choir at Theater Basel since the 17/18 season.
