An experimental setup
Love is like a chemical reaction between unknown components. In his work ‹Wahlverwandtschaften›, Goethe conducts the following experiment: Charlotte and Eduard are a unit. Their bond is put to the test by the addition of Ottilie and the Captain. Eduard is attracted to Ottilie, Charlotte to the Captain. Director Leonie Böhm continues the experimental setup of the classic material and looks at the network of relationships from a contemporary perspective: in Goethe's language, Leonie Böhm asks how we deal with change in our relationships. And what the continuation of the community might look like. Leonie Böhm was recently awarded the Nestroy Theater Prize for her production of ‹Fräulein Else› and invited to the 2026 Berlin Theater Meeting. After ‹König Teiresias›, she is now working with the Basel company for the second time.

Spätestens seit Fräulein Else, für das die Regisseurin den Nestroy-Preis und jüngst eine Theatertreffen-Einladung einsackte, hat sie das Spiel mit der vierten Wand perfektioniert. Auch an diesem Abend haben Böhm und Ensemble das Publikum bald für sich gewonnen […].
Oft gibt es schöne und berührende Momente, etwa wenn sich die vier um Fritzi Ernst scharen und Charlotte erst zaghaft auf das Keyboard klopft und dann mit dem Hauptmann musiziert. Daneben bläst Eduard in die Flöte, schüttelt die Spucke weg, während sich Ottilie wie eine Schlange um ihn windet.
Diese Vielseitigkeit stellen die vier Protagonisten – Maja Beckmann, Vera Flück, Dominic Hartmann und Kay Kysela – tatsächlich eindrucksvoll unter Beweis. Besonders hervorzuheben ist Maja Beckmann: wendig, stimmgewaltig, ein wahres Feuerwerk in zartem Körper. Am Keyboard begleitet Fritzi Ernst das Geschehen und wertet es mit einzelnen Songs im Stil deutscher Pop-Romantik auf.
