Between dream and reality

Henry Purcell's only opera is about the unhappy love story between Dido, the Queen of Carthage, and the hero Aeneas, who has fled from the destroyed city of Troy. However, the hero only plays a minor role here. Rather, it is Dido's emotional states between hope, grief and loneliness that inspired the British composer to write what is perhaps his greatest music in 1688. The first opera production by the Belgian dance theatre collective Peeping Tom makes the protagonist's emotional world physically visible in surreal images. The Swiss star mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis sings and plays the title role.
