A retro-futuristic theatre piece

In front of a huge green screen, Ray Bradbury imagines a film adaptation of his ‹Chroniken vom Mars›. In his book, published in 1950, he described the colonization of Mars in loosely connected short stories: in the future of 1999, the Martians suspect that the end of their civilization is approaching. The first human expeditions fail due to the complex, telepathically highly gifted Martian culture, but bring in chickenpox.

Mars becomes an extinct planet and nothing stands in the way of its exploitation. The humans take possession of Mars, bringing with them their idealism, but also their greed and violence. In a retro-futuristic live theater film, director Philippe Quesne observes how we humans are capable of the best and the worst.

Anja Dirks receives the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Anja Dirks, dramaturge and co-acting director at Theater Basel, has been awarded the prestigious ‹Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres› by the French Ministry of Culture for her commitment to Francophone culture.

What a show! The Basel audience had to wait three years for Philippe Quesne's return - but it was worth it.

BZ Basel

It is impressive to see the mastery with which Theater Basel integrates virtual worlds into its productions without diminishing the fascination of the stage action and simply succumbing to the dazzle of digitalization.

Badische Zeitung

‹Chroniken vom Mars› is a play straight out of a magic box, funny, pointed and surprising, with all the facets of well-made theater.

And the actors and actresses play in front of this green screen, they also wear green full-body suits and thus merge with the images that are created on the background. That has a lot of appeal (and) it makes for fantastic images.

SRF 2 Kultur

And when figures that these screen people only dream of appear in the picture, the result is an amusing and confusing jumble that reminds us from afar, with its very own aesthetic means, that we no longer know exactly what is «reality» and what is «fiction» in our lives either.
