Stück Labor

Theater Basel’s Resident Playwrite Programme

«Stück Labor Basel» was initiated by Theater Basel in 2008 to strengthen contemporary playwriting in Switzerland. Since its expansion to a writer in residence model in 2011 «Stück Labor Basel» has enabled three playwrights per season to work at a prestigious theatre in Switzerland – in addition to Theater Basel, at POCHE / GVE in Geneva and at the Konzert Theater Bern.

Regular employment as a playwright in residence provides the writers with a secure financial and time framework to spend a year working on a new text for the stage that they are able to review and revise in consultation with theatre practitioners at their own theatre and the other playwrights in residence. The playwrights are also supported by «Stück Labor Basel» with advice and regular exchanges. The text created during their residency will then be produced by the relevant theatre as a full production in the following season.

This year’s position as playwright in residence at Theater Basel has been awarded to Thiemo Strutzenberger.

The Basel-based actor and playwright Thiemo Strutzenberger was born in Kirchdorf an der Krems (Upper Austria) in 1982 and trained to be an actor at the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna. Alongside his work as an actor at theatres such as the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, the Theater Neumarkt in Zürich, Schauspielhaus Vienna and Theater Basel, he also completed a Master’s Degree in Gender Studies at the University of Vienna. He also participated in the Forum-Text writing project run by the drama forum of uniT Graz, mentored by the writer Peter Waterhouse, and the Vienna Schauspielhaus’s playwriting programme «stück/für/stück», where he won the Audience Award for his play «Dogs of God». His play «The Zofen Suicides» received its world premiere in 2010. This was followed by further world premieres of his plays «Queen Recluse» (2013, director: Martin Schmiederer) and «Dogs of God» (2014, director: Barbara Weber) at the Vienna Schauspielhaus. Thiemo Strutzenberger has been a company member at Theater Basel since the 2015 / 2016 season. The position as playwright in residence allows him to reduce his acting commitments and to focus on his acting for a year.
