Meisterkurs mit Gundula Janowitz
Two exceptional artists who have been influential figures on international opera stages and concert platforms for decades will be our guests in Basel for the opera studio OperAvenir’s masterclass. The soprano Gundula Janowitz and the mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender will pass on their knowledge and experience to the young ensemble of OperAvenir. In addition to the two official masterclasses, where you can be there live to experience the work of these two singers with our talented youngsters, there will also be an evening devoted entirely to these two remarkable artists in which they will tell of their eventful lives on the world’s stages and perhaps even perform the occasional aria or Lied for you.
Herbert von Karajan recruited the soprano Gundula Janowitz for the Vienna State Opera when she was barely 22 years old and thus laid the foundation for the singer’s subsequent career around the world. Her repertoire stretches from Bach through Mozart and Verdi as far as Richard Strauss, and she has worked together with conductors such as Karl Böhm, Otto Klemperer, Leonard Bernstein and Sir Georg Solti in compiling an impressive discography. She has always had a particular fondness for Lied recitals, with which she thrilled countless concertgoers until her official retirement in 1990. Since then Gundula Janowitz’s great passion has been to pass on her skills to subsequent generations of singers in masterclasses.
An exceptional career, a love of the Lied form and the desire to pass on her own knowledge to young singers are all things Gundula Janowitz shares with the mezzo-soprano Brigitte Fassbaender. Brigitte Fassbaender made her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper at the age of 21 and has since appeared at almost all the world’s leading opera houses. Her range of roles includes almost all the great parts in this category from Mozart, Massenet, Verdi, Wagner and Strauss to Alban Berg and Aribert Reimann. Since retiring from the stage Brigitte Fassbaender has impressed with her work as a director. She was recently Artistic Director of the Braunschweig State Theatre and the Tyrolean State Theatre in Innsbruck. She has been the Artistic Director of the Eppaner Liedsommer since 2002, whose centrepiece consists of two ten-day masterclasses – one of which she leads herself. This masterclass promises to be a particularly special one, at which you will have the rare opportunity to experience these two remarkable singers
