Rock Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice

Performed in English with German surtitles

In 1970 the album «Jesus Christ Superstar» exploded onto the scene. The LP of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s rock opera perfectly reflected the spirit of the time, bringing together the 60s generation’s search for meaning, hippy culture, a classic musical form and rock in one spectacular hit concept album. «Jesus Christ Superstar» was the first full-length work by Lloyd Webber and his lyricist Rice. It tells the last seven days in the life of Jesus from Judas’s point of view. However, Lloyd Webber and Rice do not characterize Judas simply as a traitor. They show him as a supporter and above all a friend of Jesus, who has to struggle with his increasing disillusionment as he is forced to watch how their shared dream slips increasingly beyond their reach. The euphoria with which people – both supporters and opponents – greet Jesus escalates more and more into a fanaticism in which Jesus becomes stylized as a cult figure. He confronts this cult of stardom with a gentle strength. However, doubts about the worth of his own deeds cause him too to quarrel with God.

This diversity of viewpoint is what drives the drama.  Irrespective of is religious aspect, the perverse extremes of the cult of stardom is a phenomenon of our time, in a world which continually seems to be falling apart. This pioneering rock opera will be directed by Tom Ryser, who is already very well known to audiences in Basel for his productions of musicals. The music will be performed in the original band arrangements for the legendary 1970 recording.
