THE MAGIC FLUTE

A grand opera in Two Acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder

In deutscher Sprache mit deutschen und englischen Übertiteln

A cry for help, a mysterious monster and three ladies mark the beginning of the fairy tale of Prince Tamino. Tamino is commanded by the Queen of the Night to free Princess Pamina from the clutches of her kidnapper Sarastro. He is aided in his quest by Papageno who promptly warbles and stumbles his way into everybody’s hearts …

The story becomes a ritual which Tamino and Pamina are obliged to follow. Tests have to be passed, old ties must be broken. Previous conceptions of good and evil are reversed. The world is turned upside down. At the end of their journey everyone is a lot wiser and more grown up. Or are they?

«The Magic Flute» is an unusual mixture of Viennese folk theatre, masonic mysteries and the world of fairy tales. First performed in 1791, it has since become one of the cornerstones of the operatic repertoire. Above all «The Magic Flute» remains a mystery whose complexity will always provide scope for further investigation. This is undertaken for Theater Basel by Julia Hölscher, resident director from the 2105/16 season. The evening’s conductor, Christoph Altstaedt, has received increasing numbers of invitations from leading international orchestras as a result of his success as resident conductor in Düsseldorf.
