Alceste, disillusioned with life, less of a misanthrope than a fanatical devotee of truthfulness, considers himself to be the only person who can see just how un-ok the state of the world is. His tirades bounce off the more pragmatic Philinte, who knows that Alceste can never be true to his own ideas because he is an unauthentic lover. The coquettish Célimène values social interaction and playful self-discovery, hastening her admirer’s decline from misanthropy into melancholy.
In his second highly comic Molière adaptation (after «The Miser», 2010), the German writer and musician PeterLicht concentrates on the nature of (social) acting and the malfunctioning of language – while reporting about oral gymnastics, droning nerves and metrosexual toes. Director Claudia Bauer will stage the world premiere of this re-working of Molière’s famous comedy «The Misanthrope».
