Das fliegende Klassenzimmer (The flying classroom)

Play after Erich Kästner
Mit Kompositionen von Jherek Bischoff. Für die Bühne adaptiert von Daniela Kranz und Sabrina Hofer.

Altersempfehlung: Ab 6 Jahren

It will soon be Christmas. In three days’ time the children of the Kirchberg boarding school will be able to leave for their long-awaited holidays. However, the grammar school boys in German teacher Kreuzkamm’s class still have to write at least two much-feared dictation exercises and defeat their enemies form the village secondary school in a snowball fight. The anxious Uli successfully overcomes a dangerous test of courage despite breaking his leg.  In addition, Johnny’s first play ‘The Flying Classroom’ is performed at the school’s Christmas celebrations, two old friends are reunited, and thanks to house master Dr. Bökh the sad scholarship boy Martin has the happiest Christmas of his life.

Erich Kästner’s classic novel from 1933 is a compelling story of friendship, bravery and solidarity. In unadorned prose and with subtle humour the German writer and leading exponent of new sobriety describes everyday school life in which – as in “real” life – what matters is to act responsibly and courageously. The needs and dreams of children and adults are both taken equally seriously.

Director Daniela Kranz, who introduced herself to Basel audiences last season with her productions of ‘The Events’ and ‘Inspector Hunkeler’ stages the novel with a mixed cast of company members and young actors. There is an original score specially written by the young Californian composer Jherek Bischoff, which he himself describes as “dynamic and dreamlike”. The songs will be sung live and accompanied by a string quartet and percussion.
