Wurde in Bristol, Grossbritannien geboren. Nach seinem Studium an der renommierten Ballet Rambert School in London wurde er als Tänzer in die Compagnie aufgenommen. Von 1991 bis 1996 war Richard Wherlock als Ballettdirektor am Theater Hagen tätig, anschliessend für drei Spielzeiten als Direktor des Luzerner Balletts, danach war er künstlerischer Leiter und Choreograph des BerlinBalletts an der Komischen Oper Berlin. Seit der Saison 2001/2002 ist er Direktor und Chefchoreograph des Ballett Basel und seit 2004 auch Intendant des renommierten Festivals «basel tanzt».

Als Choreograph arbeitete er für folgende Compagnien Tanzforum Köln, Ballet de la Normandie, Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, English Dance Theatre, Finnish Dance Theatre Helsinki, Ballett Staatstheater Braunschweig, Zürcher Ballett Juniors, Rumänisches National Ballett, Innsbrucker Ballett am Tiroler Landestheater, The Icelandic Ballet, Ballet National de Nancy et de Lorraine, Ballet National de Marseille, Ballet de l'Opéra de Nice, aalto ballett theater essen, «Europa Danse» (Unesco), Ballett der Deutschen Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Singapore Dance Theatre, Ballett der Vereinigten Bühnen Graz, Introdans in Arnheim/Holland, Ballett des Badischen Staatstheaters Karlsruhe und Ballet Contemporaneo del Teatro San Martin/Argentinien. Ausserdem schuf er einen Ballettabend für Les Etoiles de l’Opéra National de Paris.

Zu seinen Arbeiten für Film und Fernsehen gehört die Choreographie für die Kinoproduktion «Hasards ou Coïncidences» von Claude Lelouch. Diese Arbeit wurde 1998 an der Biennale in Venedig, sowie den Festivals von Montréal und Chicago präsentiert. Für den mehrfach prämierten Tanzfilm «Passengers», der vom Schweizer Fernsehen DRS, RM Associates und 3sat produziert wurde, erhielt er den Prix Italia 2000. Sein erfolgreicher jüngster Film «One bullet left» - ebenfalls vom Schweizer Fernsehen DRS produziert - wurde 2003 mit der «Rose d'Or» beim Internationalen Festival der Fernseh-Unterhaltung ausgezeichnet.
1999 wurde Richard Wherlock für den internationalen Tanzpreis «Benois de la Danse» nominiert.

Der Förderung des künstlerischen Nachwuchses gilt Richard Wherlocks besonderes Interesse. Er engagiert sich als Jurymitglied bei zahlreichen internationalen Wettbewerben und lädt immer wieder junge Choreographen zur Zusammenarbeit mit dem Ballett Basel ein.

Richard Wherlock - Ballet director Since the beginning of the season 2000/2001 artistic director and chief choreographer of Ballett Basel (Theater Basel, Switzerland), was born in Bristol (England). After studying at the renowned Ballet Rambert School he went on to perform with the Company. In 1981 he was engaged as a soloist with Tanzforum Cologne, and later he became resident choreographer where he created many original works for the company repertoire. From 1991 until 1996 he has been the artistic director ot the Ballet Theater Hagen (Germany). The following three years he directed the Luzerner Ballett (Switzerland). Then he was the artistic director and chief choreographer of BerlinBallett - Komische Oper.

For "Les Etoiles de l'Opéra National de Paris", he choreographed a ballet programme as well as a Solo evening for Marie-Claude Pietragalla, Etoile de l'Opéra National de Paris and director of the Ballet National de Marseille, Japan tour 1999.
His works for films and television include the choreography for the cinema film «Hasards ou Coïncidences» by Claude Lelouch, presented at the festivals of: Venice (Biennale 1998), Montréal and Chicago and the choreography for the multiple award winning dance film (e.g. Prix Italia 2000) «Passengers», produced by Swiss Television DRS, RM Associates, 3sat, (1999). His newest film, produced as well by Swiss Television DRS, «One bullett left» had its world premiere in October 2003 and in the same year was honoured with the Rose d'or prize by the International Festival of Television Endertainement.
Nominated for the «Benois de la danse» Prize 1999, Richard Wherlock is jury member of several distinguished international competitions such as «8. Concours International de Danse de Paris», «12. International competition for choreographers», Hannover.
For the Bregenzer Festspiele (Austria) in June 2003 he choreographed «West Side Story», which had its most successful resumption in summer 2004.
